I can't believe you're 15

My dearest Alireza,

Let me start by saying that I can’t believe you’re 15. But you are… and I think no other mother of a 15 year old boy, has ever been happier that she - maybe even stupidly - decided to get pregnant 15 years ago! You know why though? Because you are the most considerate, caring and sweet teenager anybody could ask for.

Last year was the hardest year of my motherhood. You became a high schooler and it’s no joke. The combination of a competitive school, competitive parents and not so hard on studying kid, is not so much fun.

But let’s face it, you’re an out-and-out teenager now. Do I have to have a 15 minute conversation with you about why exactly you’re expected to refill the toilet paper in your bathroom - which is also the guest bathroom - when it’s finished without me saying it? You bet. Do I have to have weekly conversations with you about why you have to keep the balance between studying and Table Tennis practice? Absolutely. Do I have to remind you to take out the trash every Monday night although it has been your responsibility for the past God knows how many years? Unquestionably! Would you hesitate in responding “I know mom, I remember!”?, God forbid!

But we get along. We more than get along… We’re good. We’re close. We laugh together, we talk, we explore stupid things together and we love each other. Me more than you of course, but it’s only natural.

Do I worry about your future? More than necessary I guess. I know in my heart that you’ll be fine. You find your way. You’re the kid of parents who find their way. You have amazing social skills and an undeniable charisma that can take you a long way.

I’m not an explorer, well that’s simply not true. I’m not a music and food explorer. It’s been years that you’ve had this cute habit of saving the songs that you think I’d like and introducing them to me by playing them for me and I often get amazed by how well you know my taste. Most of the time I’d end up listening to the song non-stop for the next few days and you’d be like: “Mooo’m, stop already. Why do I do this to myself?” LOL… A few days ago, your new choice for me was “Lovely” by Billie Eilish. I was planning a surprise birthday gathering for you with your friends and was very much in the mood of your birthday. So when the song went “Tear me to pieces, skin and bone… Hello, welcome home”, although it may not have been an obvious interpretation of the verse, my mind went right to the delivery.

Kid, you’re the only one who can tear my skin and bone and I’d still welcome you to my heart and home. You are an amazing mature lovely human being and I thank God every single day that I have you.

Love
Mom
